Wow, so, what can I say. The last race before the chase and from my standpoint, this was quite a boring race until the last 20 laps or so. This year, our annual trip to Richmond included my sister who has developed into quite the Nascar fan. We had the infield "Hot Passes" (thank you again, Colleen) which allowed us to walk through the infield and garage and behind pit wall all throughout the race. We got to see some drivers walk to the driver introductions, stand on pit lane 5 feet from Brad Keselowski during pre-race festivities, almost run over by Josh Wise as he came into garage area for service. We got to see Jimmie Johnson pull into the garage for an unknown reason (all they did was put on four fresh Goodyears and release him). Being that it was my sisters first time experiencing the infield hot passes, I told everyone that with 20 to go, we were going to head over to victory lane to watch the winner pull in and celebrate (at that point in time Carl Edwards had the lead). That's when everything started to unfold.
Newman takes the lead. Caution flag comes out thanks to Bowyer's spin. Newman, who needs to win the race, pits and takes 4 tires and loses lead. Menard, now the leader, spins his tires on the restart, Edwards beats him to the line and holds off Kurt Busch to win. It wasn't until Monday night when I found out about the MWR drama and Truex being docked enough points to allow Newman into the chase. In my opinion, Logano, who also had his own controversy, should be knocked out also to allow Gordon in.
I don't think the officials are done yet, so we shall see. The big pool got shook up a bit due to the points deducted from Bowyer and Truex. James with a big week sniffing on second place, and John falls to last with his low score.
In the half pool, lots of movement, but the top three remain the same with Joe atop the leaderboard by only 1 point. Enjoy the race Sunday and stay tuned for more drama as the Chase-gate still unfolds.
